Nursing legend Florence Nightingale helped mark International Nurses Day at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre by enjoying an ice cream cone.

The sweet treat came courtesy Remo Serapiglia, 58, who operates his own fleet of Remo’s Gelato ice cream vans, and is currently undergoing treatment at the Beatson.

And he knows only too well the vital role the nurses who have followed Nightingale play in patient care.

Remo said: “I just wanted to try to say a thank you to the nurses who I’ve met. To me they are true life angels, they really are.”

Staff around the centre marked International Nurses Day, which takes place each year on reformer and educator Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

And it was one of the Beatson’s own educators, Practice Development Facilitator Jane Robertson, who took on the role of Miss Nightingale,

Jane, a nurse for 40 years, said: “We wanted to show the history of nursing and highlight the importance of the work nurses do.

“And it’s a wonderful gesture by Remo, which has put smiles on everyone’s face.”
